Synodal (Patriarchal) Library (Moscow)

The Synodic printing house has maintained a continuous tradition from the Sovereign's Printing Yard, which was founded by Ivan the Terrible and further glorified by Ivan Fyodorov. Within the courtyard of the 19th-century printing house, the former buildings from the 17th century (now part of the Historical and Archival Institute at the Russian State University) have been preserved, albeit in a reconstructed form. Prior to the printing of the Cathedral Code in 1649, all Moscow printers only published Holy Scripture and liturgical books, with the exception of Alphabetic books and other similar publications. During the reign of Peter I, the patriarchal printing houses also produced the first civil publications of the time. Later, the Synodic Printing House published spiritual and scientific literature on church history, Scripture, and other topics.
