Monuments

Vladimir Alekseyevich Kornilov (1806—1854) is Vice Admiral of the Russian fleet and a hero of the Crimean War. He fell in a battle on the Malakhov Mound during the first bombardment of Sevastopol by the Anglo-French troops. The monument was opened in October 1895. The authors are Lieutenant-General A. A. Bilderling and a sculptor Academician I. N. Schroeder. During the Great Patriotic War the monument was demolished. Restored in 1983. Authors of the project — sculptor M. K. Vronsky and the architect V. G. Gnezdilov — reproduced the lost monument in full, completely reinstalling its original idea and composition.

The monument to Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev (1788—1851) was opened in 1867 on the territory of the Lazarevsky Barracks. A sculptor N. S. Pimenov and I. I. Podozerov designed the monument. In the 1920s of XX century the monument was demolished.

The monument to Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov (1802—1855) was opened in 1898. The authors of the monument are A. A. Bilderling and I. N. Schroeder. In 1928, the monument was dismantled; a monument to Lenin was erected instead on its place in 1932. In 1959, a reconstructed monument was reopened (the monument to Lenin was moved to another place). The authors of the new monument are N. V. Tomsky and A. V. Arefiyev. The reconstructed monument in general repeats the previous one.

A monument was erected on the Historic Boulevard to the 100th anniversary of Leo Tolstoy in 1928. Did not remain intact. In 1959, a granite stele was opened with writer’s bas-relief of white marble and an inscription: “To the great Russian writer L. N. Tolstoy — a participant in the defense of Sevastopol on the 4th bastion in 1854—1855” (authors — G. N. Denisov, I. I. Stepanov).
