The Monastery of the Holy Dormition

It is located in a mountain area of Mariam-Dere (a Ravine of Maria) near Bakhchisaray. Byzantine monks icon-worshipers founded the monastery as early as the VIII century. The first inhabitants hollowed out a temple and cave-cells in a wall, which explains the origin of another name of the monastery — the Assumption Monastery of the Caves. The monastery was abandoned in the XIII-XIV centuries and in revived again the XV century. In addition to the monastery complex, on the adjacent territory there is a military cemetery of fallen in battle during the Crimean War of 1853—1856 soldiers.

The Khan’s Palace or Hansaray

The construction of the palace began simultaneously with the construction of the city in the beginning of the XVI century, during the reign of Khan Sahib I Geray. In 1736, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1735—1739, Bakhchisaray was captured by Russian troops. After the annexation of the Crimea to Russia, the palace was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After the February Revolution, the Museum of the Turkic-Tatar Culture was founded in the Khan’s Palace. Currently, the palace is part of the Bakhchisaray State National Park and Historical and Cultural Museum. The palace accommodates the premises of a museum of history and culture of the Crimean Tatars, an art museum, an exhibition of bladed weapons and firearms.

Eski-Kermen

Byzantines founded the city at the end of VI century. It is located within the II (inner) ridge of the Crimean Mountains, in 7.5 ml from Bakhchisaray. There are about 360 cave structures of the military (fighting casemates), the cult (church, chapel, burial crypt) and economic purposes (grain pits, water tanks, vaults, cellars, industrial premises, stalls for cattle).

Chufut-Kale

The cave city is located in 1.5 ml from Bakhchisaray. The total area of the site is 113.5 ac. The fortress was erected at the end of the VI — the VII centuries and belonged to the pre-Alans — federates of the Byzantine Empire. In the XV century, during a formation of the Crimean Khanate Chufut-Kale became its first capital. At the beginning of the XVI century, Khan with his entourage and, after him, almost all Muslims moved to a new residence — Bakhchisaray. After the departure of the Muslims, the fortress continues to be used by the khans for a long time as weapon storage and shelter in case of civil strives. Mainly Karaite and, until 1778, a small Armenian community remained here.

The Big Khan Mosque

Buyuk Khan Cami — the Great Khan Mosque was built in the XVI century and belongs to the early buildings of the Khan Palace complex. In the middle of the XVIII century, Arabic calligraphic inscriptions, placed in figured green cartouches, appeared on the facade of the mosque. The mosque is functioning. In the garden to the south of the Great Khan mosque is located the Khan cemetery (mezarlyk). Here lies the ashes of nine Crimean khans, forty-five members of the Khan family (men and women), as well as a number of representatives of the highest court nobility. Most marble monuments are decorated with exquisite ornamental carvings.
